More heavy rain for West Coast

12:23 pm on 12 January 2013

More heavy rain is on the way for the West Coast of the South Island.

The wild weather is expected to hit Fiordland early on Sunday morning, move up the West Coast during the day and then weaken over central New Zealand at night.

Warnings of heavy rainfall have been issued for the Fiordland and Westland ranges, and spillover is expected into the headwaters of lakes and rivers in Otago and Canterbury.

MetService says rainfall in Southland and Otago may cause problems given the recent rain there.

A brief burst of heavy thundery rain may also occur over northwest Nelson and the Tararua ranges on Saturday night.

MetService says people should keep an eye on weather updates in case the situation worsens.
