Helicopter checks for fire hot spots

8:26 am on 14 January 2013

A helicopter with thermal imaging equipment is being used to check for hot spots after the sites of two scrub fires in Canterbury flared up.

One of the blazes re-ignited at 6pm on Sunday in an area near West Melton, where flames spread through more than 80 hectares of pine plantation and grassland last Friday.

There was also a flare-up in a potting mix heap south of Prebbleton.

Both fires on Sunday were put out quickly.

Brent Dunn of the Southern Fire Communication Centre told Radio New Zealand's Summer Report programme that the danger of fire in the region is not yet over as conditions are still very dry.
