Climbers airlifted from Mt Tasman

Two climbers missing since Saturday have been rescued from a crevasse area near the summit of Mt Tasman in the Southern Alps.

Police say rescuers airlifted the two men to safety on Monday after two nights trapped high on the mountain.

Inspector Dave Gaskin said the pair failed to return from their climb on Saturday but severe weather conditions had prevented any earlier search for them.

The men, a 23-year-old from Australia and a 25-year-old from Britain, have been taken to Mt Cook village for a medical assessment and appear to be uninjured, though are wet and cold.
