A Chinese tourist is in a stable condition after being impaled by a fence post when a bus crashed in Bay of Plenty.

The incident occurred on State Highway 5 between Tirau and Rotorua when the bus veered off the road and into a fence about midday on Tuesday.

Waikato Hospital says the 17-year-old was impaled when a fence post came through the window.

The Westpac rescue helicopter took him to hospital with the fence post still in his chest. He had surgery in the afternoon and is recovering.

The 15 other people on the bus suffered minor injuries.
