Charles's visit a waste of money - republicans

The Republican Movement says Prince Charles's visit to New Zealand last year was a waste of money, costing $200,000 a day.

The group says that according to information recently obtained under the Official Information Act the cost of the six-day tour was $1.19 million. Transport accounted for $425,714 of that.

Chairperson Lewis Holden says the total cost was over the top compared with a tour in 2005 by the prince.

He says a poll conducted by his organisation after Charles and his wife Camilla left the country suggests only one in five New Zealanders want the prince as the next head of state.

Mr Holden says polls show a growing number of people wanting a New Zealander to be elected head of state because they do not want to remain tied to the monarchy.
