Birdwatchers of a different kind gathered along Wellington's waterfront on Monday.
The Birdman Wellington event sees participants dress up in costume and launch themselves off Taranaki Wharf.
Children are also encouraged to take part in the competition with their own specially made airstrip.
Wellington City Council and Forest & Bird have teamed up with Capital Productions to put on the event, held on the region's anniversary day.
