Murder charge laid over death in Samoa jail

4:09 pm on 29 January 2013

A 21-year-old man in Samoa serving a life sentence for murder has appeared in the Supreme Court charged with murdering a New Zealand man.

Jonathan Patrick Crichton was before the Chief Judge for a pre-trial hearing in Apia for killing Hans Dalton on 26 December last year.

Critchton has not entered a plea yet and his lawyer did not turn up, so the case has been adjourned until February, Radio New Zealand International reports.

Last week, Critchton was sentenced to life for killing a taxi driver at gunpoint in 2012.

Mr Dalton, who suffered from poor mental health, was in jail when he was killed.

He had been moved there because police had nowhere to restrain him when he became violent.
