Council determined to progress with Haast-Hollyford Rd

The Westland District Council says it is moving on with plans for the Haast-Hollyford Road, regardless of whether the Southland District Council supports it.

The councils have been debating the 127km road proposal, which would run from Haast, through the Fiordland National Park into the Milford Sound.

Westland District mayor Maureen Pugh says the business case for the privately-funded road is not dependent on support from the Southland District Council, although she hopes they will endorse it.

Part of the road would run through the Southland District catchment andwould need resource consent.

The Southland District Council is expected to formally discuss the proposal at a meeting in February, including what impact it could have on their ratepayers.
