A 19-year-old Taumarunui man has had further charges laid against him following a manhunt in the town on Sunday morning.

Police have now charged him with aggravated robbery, burglary and commissioning a crime with a firearm. He had earlier been charged with unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

People in some parts of the town were told to stay indoors and keep their heads down during a three-hour search that involved the Armed Offenders Squad and helicopters.

Police say the man fired a gun and threatened people with more than one weapon.

The man, who has name suppression, appeared briefly before a Justice of the Peace in Taumarunui on Monday, did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody for a mental-health assessment.

Inspector Steve Mastrovich said on Sunday that the police were talking to witnesses to piece together what happened between Raurimu, Whakahoro and Taumarunui in the early hours of the morning up until mid-morning.

Police say no one was injured in the incident.
