Surge in house values spreads beyond Auckland

The surge in house values in Auckland and Christchurch is spreading to other centres.

Quotable Value says the annual increase in property values in Hamilton, Wellington and New Plymouth picked up in January.

It says values across the country rose by 6.2% in the year to the end of January, compared to 5.7% for the whole of 2012.

In Auckland, values were up 10.2% - nearly 16% in the central city alone.

Values in Queenstown were up 4.4% for the year ending in January, well up on the 2.9% increase in 2012.

In Palmerston North, values were up 3.8% during the same period, compared with a previous gain of 3.6%.

QV research director Jonno Ingerson says the rise has been driven by a small but steady increase consumer confidence. He says, however, that consumer confidence is a fickle thing and it will be interesting to see what happens to the market in the next period.

Mr Ingerson also told Checkpoint he believes the Government will take a wait-and-see approach and won't act to influence prices this year.
