Inquiry to consider new Christchurch highway

8:32 pm on 15 February 2013

An application to upgrade the southern corridor of the Christchurch Motorway has been referred to a independent board of inquiry.

New Zealand Transport Agency officials say that they want a new four-lane state highway and upgrading to four lanes on the existing main south road in the second stage of the motorway upgrade.

Environment Minister Amy Adams says the Environmental Protection Authority recommended referral of the application to a board of inquiry.

Ms Adams says the application has national significance and the inquiry will allow members of the public to voice their opinions.

A report is expected from the inquiry in nine months.
