Man with stake through belly recovering

9:13 pm on 15 February 2013

An 85-year-old Gisborne man taken to hospital with a steel stake protruding from his abdomen is recovering.

The man was walking down a path at a house on Delatour Road at 8.40am on Friday when he tripped and fell, and the steel fencepost pierced the left side of his abdomen.

When emergency services arrived he was still on the ground, pinned by the post.

The emergency staff dug a hole under the man and cut off the post at ground level to free him.

The embedded piece was later removed at Gisborne Hospital.
