Gay Pride parade entertains Aucklanders

6:06 pm on 16 February 2013

Tens of thousands of people have lined the streets and hundreds have walked and danced in the first large gay pride parade in Auckland since 2001.

The Auckland Pride Parade snaked down Ponsonby Road, living up to expectations as a noisy, colourful expression of gay and transgender pride.

Members of the military marched for the first time, to huge cheers from onlookers.

But there was also a serious message to the festivities, with placards about transgender discrimination, AIDS and equal human rights.

There was also a political presence, with members of both Labour and the Green parties marching, including Labour's deputy leader Grant Robertson.
