The Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council has given the Wanganui District Council up to four weeks to stop a foul odour coming from its wastewater plant, before it takes out an enforcement order with the Environment Court.
The plant's treatment ponds have been creating the odour since before Christmas.
In January, the regional council issued the Wanganui District Council an abatement notice warning if the odour hadn't stopped by Thursday last week, it would seek an enforcement order.
The regional council says it's now seeking that order.
But it says if the district council can reduce the odour to within the plant's boundaries before the Environment Court processes the order, which could be three to four weeks, it will be dropped.
The district council dumped 20 tonnes of lime on the treatment ponds on Friday which it hopes will reduce gases causing the odour escaping into the air.
