Canterbury police allowed to carry tasers

Police officers in Canterbury now have permission to carry tasers on their belts while maintenance is carried out on the vehicle safes where they are usually kept.

About 900 safes have been stripped from the front of police cars around the country because of a security flaw.

While they are being upgraded, the Canterbury District Commander has authorised officers in his area to carry tasers on their belts.

All other officers have to store their tasers in another safe in the boot of their car.

The Police Association wants the rules permanently relaxed throughout the country, but police national headquarters says the measure will come to an end when the safes are fixed.
