An official transfer of New Zealand's largest collection of sound recordings has been completed.

Management of more than 70,000 items dating from the 1930s has moved from Radio New Zealand to the Film Archive. The material will be preserved and digitised.

Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Chris Finlayson on Monday paid tribute to the work Radio New Zealand has done to keep the Sound Archives collection.

Mr Finlayson said other models throughout the world combine the resources of film and sound.

The minister said Radio New Zealand continues to play an important role in gathering material that will be archived for the future.
