Two senior Auckland Regional Council executives have quit after a debacle over a football match starring David Beckham cost the council $1.79 million.

Parks general manager Lance Vervoort and Mt Smart Stadium group manager John Lynch resigned on Thursday after the match at Mt Smart Stadium flopped.

Both men were on extended leave following an internal review into the way game was handled.

The match between Beckham's LA Galaxy and the Oceania All Stars attracted only 16,000 spectators. An estimated 20,000 were needed for the ARC to break even.
