Report on how to fix foul smell weeks away

9:10 pm on 20 February 2013

Whanganui's mayor says quick-fix solutions to get rid of foul smells coming from the wastewater plant seem to be working, but it will be eight weeks before it is known how best to solve the problem long term.

A sulphur smell has plagued residents since before Christmas last year, with the plant failing to properly process waste and excess sludge building up in one large effluent pond.

Mayor Annette Main says engineering firm Cardno BTO says it can fix the problem and is working on a report detailing how.

The report is expected in two months and will detail whether new effluent ponds need to be dug or if changes can be made to the existing pond.
