A Hamilton Boys' High student has won the title of New Zealand's best speller, in the Vegemite Spelling Bee.

Christopher Jury, 13, beat 12 other finalists in Wellington on Saturday afternoon, taking home a trophy and the chance to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States.

He says he will spend the next two months studying from a dictionary that contains 470,000 words using American spelling.

Christopher won the New Zealand spelling bee with the word "iterative".
