Meeting about desecrated graves 'too little too late'

5:30 pm on 24 February 2013

About 150 people have attended a meeting in west Auckland to discuss how to repair dozens of desecrated baby graves.

About three rows of baby's plots at Waikumete cemetery were ploughed and decorations removed earlier this month by council contractors who were laying grass.

A mother of a baby buried at the cemetery says her family is in disbelief and the meeting is too little too late.

She says families should have been notified of any work being done, and the council's actions are disgraceful.

A council spokesperson says he hopes the meeting will rebuild some trust with the families and try to rectify what's been done.

He says the council wants to make sure each plot is repaired and redecorated by each family.
