5:58 am on 26 February 2013

The first of two major exhibitions of Ralph Hotere's art works will open later this year.

Hotere, 81, whose career spanned five decades, died on Sunday. He had been unwell for several years following a stroke.

Dunedin Public Art Gallery director Cam McCracken said a collaborative exhibition with artist Bill Culbert has been in development for several months.

He said the exhibition called Dark Matter will open in October.

Mr McCracken said a second Hotere exhibition paying tribute to his monumental contribution to this country's artist landscape will be held in 2015.

A requiem mass for Hotere will be held on Thursday at St Joseph's Cathedral in Dunedin.
