Dental records will be used to identify a body found in a car that crashed off Rimutaka Hill Road between Wellington and Wairarapa.

The body was found in a black Ford Falcon, which fits the description of a car belonging to missing Lower Hutt man Stephen Adams.

Mr Adams was last seen on 31 January when he left his home to drive to Wairarapa.

Despite a police search of the area at the time, the car was only discovered on Saturday by helicopter pilot Maurice Wooster who was in the area on a surveying job and was able to fly low and spot the crash site.

Mr Wooster drove back later and climbed down to the site to confirm there was a body inside.

Lower Hutt Detective Sergeant Steve Harwood says forensic dentists will use records to confirm the identity of the body.

However, the Adams family believe it is that of their missing husband and father, and have asked for privacy to allow them to grieve.
