They say Douglas James Archer has vital information about the attack that has left the couple injured and traumatised.

A 72-year-old man suffered head injuries and an 80-year-old woman received head and arm injuries during the assault in their home in the suburb of St Martins.

Police say Mr Archer, who is from Christchurch, is European, tall and thin, and is believed to be travelling in a 1996 Honda Accord sedan, with the registration number UJ-7255.

Detective Sergeant Michael Ford said Mr Archer should not be approached and anyone with information on his whereabouts should contact police urgently.

He said the couple were in a stable condition on Saturday and were receiving support from family and friends.
