Car fire spreads to scrub

6:23 am on 4 March 2013

An electrical fault in a car sparked a large scrub fire near Christchurch.

The Fire Service said the blaze broke out about midnight on Sunday and spread rapidly from the car to engulf more than three hectares of the Cashmere Hills. The fire was visible through most of Christchurch.

Firefighters had to ferry water to the site and took several hours to bring it under control due to the rough terrain.
