An auction of motorcycling memorabilia belonging to Burt Munro has raised $24,000 for his ill daughter.

Munro broke the land speed record on his Indian motorcycle in the 1960s, and his life story was the subject of the 2005 film, The World's Fastest Indian.

His family plans to use the money to buy his daughter Gwen Henderson, who is in her 80s and has had a stroke, a mobility van.

Webbs auction house in Auckland says a national institution has bought the memorabilia but it can't say which one.

The collection includes engraved valves, pistons, letters and speed verification certificates.
