The police say three teenage boys are lucky to be alive after a drunken joy ride in Bay of Plenty ended in a crash.

The boys, aged 16, crashed their Honda Accord in Te Puna near Tauranga at 3.30am on Sunday.

The driver failed to take a corner and the car rolled, ending up on its roof in a ditch.

Police say all three teenagers were under the influence of alcohol.

One passenger was taken to hospital with minor injuries. Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders said staff were amazed no one was killed.

In a separate incident, a 15-year-old boy and two girls aged 14 have been referred to Youth Aid after reaching speeds of up to 130 km/h in a stolen car in Te Puke.

Police said the driver fled from officers and reached Mount Maunganui before road spikes were used to stop the car.
