TVNZ to cut 20 editorial jobs

6:05 pm on 31 March 2009

Televison New Zealand has told news and current affairs staff about 20 jobs are set to go by May.

Earlier in March, the state broadcaster announced plans to make about 90 staff redundant in a bid to shave $25 million from its budget.

News and current affairs staff, some accompanied by lawyers, were told of the cuts on Tuesday morning.

Information passed to Radio New Zealand shows 33 jobs will go with only 13 to be re-established.

Among the more visible changes, the 8pm news on TVNZ 7 will only have one presenter, while the 4.30pm newsreader on TV 1 will now double as producer.

One editor will now oversee all news bulletins, while reporter numbers in sport, politics and health will be reduced.

A final decison on who goes and who stays will be made on 17 April.
