Building owner challenges decision stopping demolition

A Wellington property owner has filed an appeal with the Environment Court after his application to demolish the building was turned down by a panel of independent commissioners.

Mark Dunajtschikowns the category one listed Harcourt Building, which has been issued with a notice saying it is earthquake prone and must be strengthened or demolished.

He says valuers told him strengthening was not a commercially viable option so he applied to demolish it.

However, the commissioners ruled the building cannot be destroyed because its heritage value is too great for the city and the region.

Mr Dunajtschik's lawyer Con Anastasiou says he will be making no further comment, as the matter is now in the hands of the Environment Court.
