Car park tax may be reviewed - English

5:03 pm on 13 March 2013

Finance Minister Bill English says that if compliance costs prove too onerous, the Government may reconsider a proposal that would increase fringe benefit tax rates on some carparking in central Auckland and Wellington.

A lobby group claims the changes will add $1500 a year to the cost of a carpark provided on an employer's own premises, and two thousand four hundred dollars for a space paid for in a commercial carpark.

Mr English says that he doubts the accuracy of those figures.

But he says if officials find that compliance costs are way out of proportion, there might be some reconsideration.

Mr English says the change has been put forward on the basis of fairness between those who pay for carparks and those who have carparks provided for them.
