Police hunting for the killer of a road worker say checkpoints in the South Waikato area have yielded some potential witnesses.

Officers on Tuesday stopped vehicles on five roads near where George Taiaroa was fatally shot and asked motorists whether they had any information.

The 67-year-old was killed on 19 March on Tram Road in the Kinleith Forest while directing traffic at a single lane bridge.

Detective Inspector Tim Anderson said the main focus is still on locating a blue Jeep Cherokee that has no licence plate on the front.

He says with a fine Easter weekend coming up, there will be a lot of people out and about in the greater North Island who may see the vehicle and be able to help with the investigation.

Detective Inspector Anderson says police have not identified a motive for Mr Taiaroa's killing, and have no main suspect.
