Job losses at Gisborne council

8:36 pm on 28 March 2013

Twelve jobs are to go in restructuring at the Gisborne District Council.

Chief executive Judy Campbell says the move will save ratepayers about $1 million a year.

She says while 27 positions are to go, they will be replaced by 15 new roles and that will reduce costs and keep rate increases at a more sustainable level.

Meanwhile, two independent reports have found the council's headquarters do not meet earthquake standards and Mrs Campbell says staff will have to get out as soon as an alternative site is found.

While much of the Fitzherbert Street complex dates back to 1953, some of it was built only in 2001.
