Holiday weekends spark Coromandel crime wave

10:18 pm on 29 March 2013

Police are warning people travelling to the Coromandel for Easter to be vigilant following a spate of burglaries over holiday weekends.

They say during every long weekend over the last year, there has been a spike in burglaries including one night when six properties were targeted on the same street.

Cooks Beach is a particular hot spot with smart phones and laptops being stolen while people are asleep.

Senior Sergeant Graham Shields has been investigating the thefts over the last 12 months and says they seem to be organised.

He says goods are being stolen and then quickly sent to Auckland to be sold.
