9:42 am on 30 March 2013

The Easter road toll has risen to two, with the death of a person in a car crash near Taupo.

The Fire Service says two cars collided on State Highway 5 near Wairakei in the central North Island just after 2am on Saturday.

The road was closed between Wairakei and Tahorakuri but has since reopened.

It is the second fatal crash of the long weekend, after a cyclist died after being hit by a car in the South Canterbury town of Temuka on Thursday evening.

The official Easter holiday road toll period began at 4pm on Thursday and ends at 6am on Tuesday.

They say a male passenger in one car has died and both drivers have been injured, one of them seriously.
