A one-year-old boy is in intensive care after falling into a fire in a Bay of Plenty town.

The TrustPower TECT rescue helicopter was called to the incident in Edgecumbe on Friday.

Base manager and pilot Liam Brettkelly says the boy from Tauranga stumbled into the fire which a family member was using to burn rubbish.

He suffered burns to his hands and feet, as well as other areas of his body.

St John ambulance staff treated the boy at the scene before he was flown to Middlemore Hospital in Auckland.

A hospital spokesperson says he will have surgery on Saturday and is in a stable condition.
