Breaches of Easter trading laws being checked

5:14 am on 11 April 2009

The Department of Labour is considering action against retailers who flouted Easter trading laws on Good Friday.

Last year the department successfully prosecuted 32 shops found open on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

It says 17 businesses have been visited so far this year: garden and music stores are the main offenders.

The Newmarket Business Association says the current law is an annual headache and doling out fines to a random number of businesses is not working.
