12:10 pm on 31 March 2013

The Easter road toll has risen to three after a woman died following a collision between two vehicles near Thames.

The crash occurred on part of State Highway 26 known as Paeroa Kopu Road just before 9.30pm on Saturday.

An ambulance spokesperson says two other people, one in a serious condition, have been taken to Waikato Hospital.

Earlier on Saturday, a 53-year-old passenger died in a two-car crash on State Highway 5 near Wairakei. One of the drivers was seriously injured.

On Thursday evening, a 55-year-old cyclist was killed in a collision with a car near Temuka in South Canterbury.

Before the holiday weekend, police were urging motorists to drive safely and were hoping to maintain last year's no fatalities statistic.

The official road toll period began at 4pm on Thursday and ends at 6am on Tuesday.
