Fresh look needed at Family Court changes - lawyer

9:55 am on 31 March 2013

An Auckland barrister says the Government needs to go even further in its backdown from some of its proposed changes to the Family Court system.

A select committee is considering a reform bill which would have banned lawyers from acting in the early stages of disputes about the care of children.

Justice Minister Judith Collins says her officials have listened to criticism and have now recommended that lawyers be allowed to get involved earlier in the process.

A former family court lawyer, Catriona MacLennan, says the minister needs to go even further.

She says the proposals need to be completely reconsidered and the long term implications assessed.

Ms McLennan says children's safety must be put at the forefront of any changes.
