More than 18,000 rabbits have been killed in the annual 'Great Bunny Hunt' near Luggate in Central Otago.

Event convenor Dave Ramsay says hunters killed 18,027 rabbits during the event on farms in Central Otago during the Easter weekend.

A 26-year-old Southland man fell over while shooting and injured his hand and forehead on Saturday.

Mr Ramsay said he was flown to Dunedin Hospital and had undergone surgery to his hand and was recovering well in hospital on Sunday.

He said there were strict safety protocols in place and the shooting was simply an accident.

AAP reports that the event attracted 432 participants this year.

The total cull was a big increase from about 10,000 rabbits killed last year.

Mr Ramsay put this down to the dry conditions, with less growth around giving the rabbits fewer places to hide.
