The Department of Labour is considering further action against 16 retailers throughout the country who opened on Easter Sunday.

Shops in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Hawke's Bay and Wellington were all visited by officials.

The department says unlike Good Friday, garden centres are permitted to trade on Easter Sunday.

A total of 33 businesses are now likely to be prosecuted for trading over Easter.
