Waitemata Police District experienced the country's biggest drop in recorded crime last year.
The number of offences reported nationwide fell to a total of 376,000, down 7.4% compared to 2011.
The Waitemata district had a drop of 12.4% to just over 31,700 offences.
The police district commander, Superintendent Bill Searle, says work with the community of Kaipatiki, which is part of Auckland's North Shore, has helped bring down theft and burglaries.
He says a focus on prevention has been essential, including checking up on offenders who are on bail, following up with victims of domestic violence and giving households security advice.
