Auckland businesses want cap on events in CBD

Some Auckland businesses are calling for a cap on the number of events which lock down the central city and are using technology to measure their effect.

Central city streets will be closed this weekend for up to 41 hours during the World Triathlon which businesses expect will hurt turnover.

World Triathlon organisers say while they are aware of the problem, overall the event has a positive impact on Auckland's economy.

Heart of the City chief executive Alex Swney says the association will monitor the effect on businesses over the two-day event using new technology.

Mr Swney says the business association will use the information gathered to recommend that the council set a limit on the number of events in the CBD.
