Nearly 700,000 people have so far had a flu injection this year, up about 100,000 on the same period last year.
Health minister Tony Ryall said this is the first time this many vaccines have been distributed to GPs and pharmacists in the first six weeks of an annual campaign.
Dr Lance Jennings, who is a member of the National Influenza Strategy Group, said the people will be more aware of influenza outbreaks in parts of Britain, and more recently, China.
Dr Jennings said people over the age of 65, pregnant women, and other at-risk people can receive the flu injection for free.
He said now is the time to get immunised, before influenza spreads locally, usually beginning in May.
