Privacy breach by Medical Council

11:57 am on 7 April 2013

An error by the Medical Council resulted in a large privacy breach by email last year.

It contained names, addresses and payment details regarding 2900 doctors.

The breach happened on 10 May last year and the council issued a formal apology two weeks later.

The apology said a letter containing payment details from one doctor was accidentally emailed as a PDF file to another doctor, and that the PDF file contained information about the other doctors.

In a letter of apology to the doctor, the council said it passed on information about the incident to the Privacy Commissioner and the Minister of Health.

The council said it was upfront about the breach.
