A Hawke's Bay man is facing charges after using a woman and child as a shield for pepper spray during an arrest.

Police were arresting the 22-year-old for home detention breaches on Monday.

They say the man pulled his girlfriend and her one-year-old child in front of him as they pepper-sprayed him after he became aggressive.

Police say the man then locked himself, the woman and child in the living room before climbing out a window, but they tasered him as he tried to run away.

The woman and her child have been assessed at Hawke's Bay Hospital and discharged.

The man was due to appear in Hastings District Court on Tuesday charged with resisting police, escaping custody and failing to appear in court on a warrant.
