Trio arrested over Canadian tourist assault

Police have arrested three men in relation to the aggravated robbery of a Canadian tourist in the Bay of Islands.

The 22-year-old man was assaulted and robbed by a group of men who befriended him at a bar in Paihia last Friday.

Police have charged two Kawakawa men, aged 21 and 22, with aggravated robbery and a 20-year-old with being an accessory.

Police say the response from local businesses and bars led to the arrests.

They had thought the robbery was linked to an Easter weekend attack on three English tourists who were robbed at knifepoint as they slept in their car in Paihia.

However, police say at this stage there does not appear to be any connection and officers are still hunting for whoever committed that crime.
