A resurgence in illegal dog fighting is suspected.
A man is due to appear in the Porirua District Court on Tuesday charged with stealing a dog in Titahi Bay last week for use as bait in a dog fight.
The SPCA says there have been rumours recently indicating that dogs are being stolen for use in fights.
National operations manager Jim Boyd says SPCA officers are investigating further.
