Marriage titles likely to remain for same sex couples

Same sex couples are expected to be able to adopt the title 'bride' or 'bridegroom' should the marriage law be amended.

The Department of Internal Affairs says it will recommend to Cabinet that the titles remain the same for all forms of marriage if the Marriage Equality bill passes on Wednesday night.

Registrar-General Jeff Montgomery said other options are also being explored for couples not wanting to adopt the traditional terms.

He said Cabinet will make a final decision on the choices to be made available, pending the bill passing its third reading.
