Home detention for teacher who filmed up skirts

A former assistant principal of a Christchurch high school who secretly filmed underneath girls' skirts has been sentenced to home detention.

Douglas Martin, formerly of Lincoln High School, appeared in the Christchurch District Court on 20 charges on Thursday.

In March, he admitted charges relating to the making of 20 secret recordings of 17 girls. He was arrested in November last year.

Martin was sentenced to 10 months' home detention, is not allowed to associate with girls under 16 years old, and has been ordered to complete treatment to address his sexual offending.

Outside court, Lincoln High School principal Linda Tame said the sentencing provides an opportunity for the girls involved to move on.

"I'm sure for those that are directly affected and the victims this is a very important milestone.

"From our perspective, Mr Martin no longer works at our school. We are pleased to see the case come to a conclusion and get on with the usual business of education."

Mrs Tame says she is still outraged with Martin's immense breach of trust and ongoing counselling would be made available to students.
