Christchurch's historic saleyards could be developed into a car sales centre.

The site on Deans Avenue opposite Hagley Park has been derelict and empty for years.

An application to develop the site has been made by JAG Developments Group, which hopes to begin work in June or July.

The company's managing director, Geoff Ward, says it intends to build a landscaped ten-lot car sales centre.

He says development of the site has been held up by zoning disagreements, but his company believes it has found a use that will benefit the city.
