Overlander to run three days a week in winter

8:06 am on 26 April 2009

The Overlander rail service between Auckland and Wellington is being reduced to a three-day-a-week service during the winter months.

From the beginning of May until the end of November, the Overlander will run on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only.

KiwiRail public affairs manager Kevin Ramshaw says while passenger numbers have held up well, they have not been high enough to continue operating a daily service.

Mr Ramshaw says the decision to reduce services over winter was initially made by the rail service's previous owner, Toll New Zealand, to reflect the seasonal decline in passenger numbers.
